Ride With Cowboys

After 36 hours of air travel, our crew packed into 4-wheel drive vehicles and journeyed another half a day across the desolate southern flank of Argentina, finally crossing the border into Chilean Patagonia, and along gravel roads into the mountains. It was a grueling introduction to a rugged land — but one so desolately beautiful and enchanting that we couldn't dare complain. In fact, none of the crew could sleep for fear of missing some new spectacular vista around the corner. Visiting Patagonia for the first time is like stepping back into prehistory, or onto some foreign planet. It's that different, that magnificent.

After arriving at our remote "hotel," sleep finally got the better of us. A full day of rest later, the crew was ready to start prepping our two truckloads of gear. In the meantime, Director Harry Lynch, Cinematographer Rodney Taylor and Story Consultant/Scout Jasper Winn hunted camera locations over the vast terrain. What a spectacular location! The difficulty clearly would be what not to shoot — and how to cover the huge distances between camera positions in our limited time there.

And another challenge had presented itself. This part of Patagonia is awesomely, continuously windy. The clouds blasting across the sky brought with them ever-changing weather — and light conditions. We knew we would spend many hours, camera at the ready, waiting for the sun, and that continuity would be difficult.
