On ranches around the world, many cowboys and cowgirls use dogs to work cattle. While in most cases they can't take the place of a skilled rider and horse, they go a long way to helping one cowboy, or a small group of them, work like a much bigger crew.
Among the many breeds used to herd cattle, Australian Heelers, Kelpies, Catahoulas, and in particular Border Collies are the most common. Walt Foster says that, once he began using Border Collies, he could never use another breed. He finds them to be the hardest working, most dedicated, friendliest and most affectionate. They need a lot of exercise to be happy, so they seem to enjoy their work immensely and will do it for hours on end without tiring or losing interest.
