Walt trains his dogs using the common English verbal commands, standardized so the dogs can work with other riders. While "Walk up," "Back" and "Stay" are fairly self-explanatory, "Come Bye" tells the dog to move forward in a clockwise direction around the herd. "Away to Me" directs the same action counterclockwise. "That'll do" tells the dog to move off the herd completely and come back to the rider.

The Fosters find their dogs invaluable in the high mountain pastures, where the terrain, alternately boggy and boulder strewn, can be difficult for a horse and rider. The dogs can also provide that extra motivation to help move reticent cattle up and over high mountain passes to the fresh grazing they need.
