Main location Cherry Creek Basin Walt Sr. and Pat Foster founded Sand Creek Ranch in 1960. At the time there was no road to the property, which sat 18 miles down the Homathko River valley from the closest ranch. The nearest town of any consequence was more than a day away, by packhorse trail and logging road.

Walt and Pat, with the help of only their 3 children, built a dirt road to the ranch, cutting their way through the granite mountainsides with a bulldozer and dynamite. They then built and installed their own hydroelectric generator, felled and milled lumber to build their own four-bedroom house, and called this remote outpost home.

The Foster family drives to work There they raised cattle across a thousand acres and home-schooled the kids, all the while growing most of their own food and surviving 30-below-zero winters.
