North Division cattle drive Shooting a large format film is a strange combination of documentary and feature filmmaking, with a healthy dose of landscape photography thrown in. To create the film, we studied the cowboys, the work they did, the settings they did it in, then scripted from these real life events workable stories that would link together visually, in a fashion worthy of the giant screen.

We chose to focus on a few subjects: different ways of training and caring for horses, a cattle drive, branding and vaccinating calves, and roping a stray bull. We structured this around a daybreak-to-sunset intro and closing, to give the Sixes a day-in-the-life feel - though in reality this work would happen over several days.

The legendary Boots O'Neal We also decided to focus on a few characters: Mike, the 45-year old ranch foreman, a CEO on horseback responsible for running the complicated, multi-million dollar operation. Boots, a 73-years young cowboy with a twinkle in his eye and a story for every situation. Dawn and Aleshia, two smiling cowgirls in their 20's, who work in the ranch's horse operation, helping raise and care for the Sixes' huge remuda of horses. And Jake, a polite and enthusiastic 21-year old cowboy born and raised on the North Division, who attended Texas Tech's ranch management program and has come back to the life and land he loves.
